Two Mountains / by Ana Filipovic Windsor

Imagine climbing a mountain, the peak obscured by clouds.

The path to the top is tough. Every step is a challenge. Placing one foot in front of the next gets you closer and closer to your goal. Focusing on your progress though you forget to look up. When you do, you are surprised to see that you have passed through the clouds and now know the truth.

The mountain you are climbing goes on forever, it is infinitely tall. Not only that, but off in the distance you see another mountain. You realize that it is your mountain. You have been climbing someone else’s mountain this whole time.

You stop climbing, considering your next step...

You could continue to climb this mountain. You have invested a lot of time and energy. You know the terrain and how to navigate it. Things are familiar. Looking back you also notice other people who are climbing this mountain. You are not alone and you have already achieved what other’s desire. You have made good progress.

Alternatively, you could turn around, deciding to pursue climbing your mountain in the distance. You might ask yourself many question. Does it make sense to go backwards? Can I even continue to climb this mountain, knowing in my heart that that this is not my true path? How will I feel when other climbers give me strange looks or ignore me entirely.

Before making your decision, you have a profound realization. This mountain has taught you so much. You developed skills and gained knowledge. You forgot that, in the beginning, you knew little. You feel grateful. You would not be you without having undertook this adventure. You thank the mountain.

And, it is in that moment, that you take your next step.
